Pusey, Edward Bouverie

Pusey was educated at the University of Oxford and in Germany and in 1828 he was appointed Regius Professor of Hebrew at Oxford. Encouraged by keble and newman, he contributed to the Tracts for the Times and quickly became regarded as a leader of the Oxford Movement. He remained in the Church of England after Newman’s defection to Rome and dedicated the rest of his life to combating liberal theology, to the studv of the Church Fathers, to the foundation of Anglican religious orders and to working for Anglican and Roman Catholic reunion. In many of these enterprises he was disappointed, but he remained, until the time of his death, an important figure in the English Church. Pusey House at Oxford was named in commemoration of him.
